The Del Forn Vineyard
This vineyard was named after a small kiln used for firing bricks which was found in the area. In the middle there is a circular metal pool set in the ground which fills from two shallow wells which hold the rainwater which falls on the area. Most of the grapes in the vineyard, which is mainly terraced, are Cabernet. In general the soil is deeper and lies on slate stone and extremely weathered stones with mainly clay fines in the lower regions. The soil is of moderate to high fertility, although there are limitations due to the region's harsh climate.
In days gone by, Pedro Jiménez grapes were cultivated in the northern part of the vineyard, which is one of the few authorised white varieties in the Priorato region along with Maccabeu and Xarel.lo, Pansa Blanca and Cartoixa. It is believed that the Cartoixa variety was introduced by the Carthusian monks who founded the Cartoixa de Scala-Dei monastery towards the end of the twelfth and the beginning of the thirteenth century.
